British Values at
Queen Elizabeth
Grammar School

British Values of democracy; individual liberty; the rule of law; mutual respect; tolerance of those with different faiths and belief are promoted at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School through a variety of means. These values are central to our ethos at QEGS, and are promoted not only through the curriculum and its content, but through every aspect of school life from extra-curricular, to the way we interact. We expect that all members of our school community are fundamentally courteous, respectful and sensitive as we go about the business of education. Each of these values is defined below and placed in a school context here at QEGS.
Democracy
At QEGS we promote the importance of democracy in a variety of ways, including:
• An active and engaged Student Council.
• Our work with The United Kingdom Youth Parliament, & the Make Your Mark campaign.
• Mock Elections and campaign groups.
• Student Voice on key areas of school life.
• Political Citizenship in the curriculum at Key Stage 3.
• A comprehensive lecture programme in the Sixth Form.
Individual Liberty
At QEGS we promote the importance of individual liberty in various ways, including:
• Students are taught about a range of beliefs and religions throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
• Students are taught the knowledge and skills to broaden the choices they are empowered to make about future work, education and travel.
• Extra-curricular activities and clubs, including extended studies through the enrichment curriculum promote choice, diversity and freedom.
• Students encouraged to voice views in lessons in a formative and respectful manner.
• Students are able to make choices about the courses they will study at Key Stage 4 and in the Sixth Form.
Rule of Law
At QEGS we promote the importance of the rule of law in a number of ways, including:
• Our Behaviour Policy.
• Accountability is stressed to all stakeholders including staff, students and Governors.
• We work closely with outside agencies including Cumbria County Council, Social Services and the Police.
• Our Media Use Policy is used to promote correct use of the internet and social media.
• Students are explicitly taught the legal framework on a number of contemporary and social issues.
• Our Safeguarding Policy and procedures.
Mutual Respect
At QEGS we promote the importance of mutual respect in a number of different ways, including:
• Our Behaviour Policy.
• Equal Opportunities policies and procedures.
• Clear guidance on good behaviour in public areas such as the Canteen, school transport, and on  social media.
• The publishing and enforcement of a uniform code.
• The curriculum helps students to learn about a wide range of people, cultures and beliefs and so develops students’ ability to be confident in their own identity, and understand and respect that of others.
• Assemblies and whole school activities such as International Afternoon.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
At QEGS we do not believe that a diversity of faiths and beliefs is something to be tolerated but rather celebrated. We are emboldened and strengthened by our diversity. We promote the importance of learning and working together with those with different faiths and beliefs through such things as:
• We are a diverse learning community and this is central to our school ethos. It is celebrated through the school environment, assemblies, curriculum and events.
• Religious Studies is taught to all students across Key Stages 3 & 4.
• The curriculum helps students to learn about a wide range of people, cultures and beliefs and so develops students’ ability to make informed decisions, form and be confident in their own identity and understand and respect that of others.
• Assemblies celebrate and draw inspiration from festivals and teachings from a range of different faiths. This is also achieved through the Sixth Form lecture programme and the Citizenship Curriculum.
